Alfredo Castro Rea Derby
DF FAVORITE MS PILOT
by Luis Prieto Zamudio, translation by Speedhorse
The first edition of the Alfredo Castro Rea Derby was held on Oct. 10, in which three- year-old horses who were paid into the 2020 Alfredo Castro Rea Classic were eligible. Only seven horses were nominated and registered
to participate for the $507,100 pesos ($24,334 U.S. approx.) purse at a distance of 400 yards. It should be noted that the Cuadra Santa Elena contributed $200,000 pesos ($9,598 U.S. approx.) to the prize of this race.
The great absence in the race was stakes winner AR Dashin Waggin, winner of the classic at two years of age, but instead was attended by her companions BP Mariah Cartel and Sweet Lil Ivory who, finished in second and third place, respectively, representing the aforementioned Cuadra Santa Elena.
At the break, Nada Interest had trouble moving freely due to the interference of Sweet Lil Ivory, so his rider looked to the right side
of the track. Meanwhile, the sorrel filly DF Favorite Ms Pilot broke away from the pack with power from the 2-post, increasing her speed under jockey Aaron Adrián Gómez to assume command of the race mid-stretch to cross the wire 1/2-length in front of BP Mariah Cartel, who in turn overtook Sweet Lil Ivory by the same difference mentioned above.
DF Favorite Ms Pilot
covered the 400 yards in
:19.47, obtaining a 94 speed
index, the best so far in her
brief sporting career consist-
ing of four starts with two
firsts and one third place
finish. DF Favorite Ms Pilot
broke her maiden on Oct.
20, 2020, at 300 yards.
Previously, she debuted in
the trials of the Alfredo
Castro Rea Classic, without
managing to advance to the final. For this success, she added $248,479 pesos ($11,924 U.S. approx.).
Owned by Cuadra Los Arrallanes and trained by Luis Eduardo Flores Gómez, DF Favorite Ms Pilot is a filly by Favorite Cartel and out of Ms Perrys Pilot, by Mr Jess Perry.
It is noteworthy that on Sept. 26, the Alfredo Castro Rea Classic (the version for two years old) was run, where BR Favorito Cartel, also by Favorite Cartel, was the winner. In both cases, the riding was done by Aarón Adrián Gómez.
DF Favorite Ms Pilot was bred in the United States by Darling Farms and sold for $8,000 at the 2019 Los Alamitos Equine Sale.
At the awards, Mr. Alfredo Castro Rea was rep- resented by Alfredo Castro Jr. and his wife, who presented the awards and buckles to Mr. Jesús Moreno, owner of the Cuadra Los Arrallanes, accompanied by his sister Lucía Moreno, Carlos Alberto Moreno and the rider Aarón Adrián Gómez.
As already mentioned, the representatives of the
Cuadra Santa Elena captured the second and third place in the finish, with BP Mariah Cartel and Sweet Lil Ivory, under the direc- tion of Alejandro Gómez and Miguel Ángel Rodríguez, respectively. BP Mariah Cartel
is by Corona Cartel and out of BP Mariahs JP (by Mr Jess Perry), while Sweet Lil Ivory comes from the cross of Ivory James with Lil Sweet Minnie (by Mr Eye Opener. They are trained by Joaquín Ramón Peláez Cortés.
Moon Flash Chic (First Moonflash-BP Snowy Succes), JM Volcom Regard (Volcom-Snow Regard), Choose Joy (FDD Dynasty-Dashing Dion) and Nada Interest (Seperate Interest- Pavonada) completed the order of finish.
