Hipodromo de las Americas, Mexico City
XXXVII Select Quarter Horse Yearling Sale
Story by Luis Prieto Zamudio • Photos by Luis Prieto Zamudio & Elliot Léon • translation by Speedhorse
The auction was held Oct. 12-14 in
the infield of the track of the Hipodromo
de las Americas, under the organization of
the Mexican Association of Quarter Horse Breeders and Horsemen, A.C. (AMCCCCM), whose President Javier Rosique León welcomed the attendees.
The corresponding 2020 event was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic, which is
still present but with less intensity, so it was necessary to apply the basic health protocol to the participants.
The only data we have for 2020 is that 615 total foals were offered, a number slightly lower than the 632 of this year. For this reason, some comparative figures of results that are presented are against 2019, when 578 foals were offered.
Of the 632 foals offered in 2021, 103 were withdrawn, an unusually high figure, leaving 529 who paraded through the ring.
The sale was conducted by auctioneer Frank Froese, supported by veterinarian Daniel Hernández Mandujano.
The sale had a total value of $95,590,000 pesos ($4,589,825 U.S.), which when compared to 2019 represents an increase of 4.6%, despite the slight reduction of 2.6% in the number
of horses auctioned and which was offset by a 7.4% improvement in the total average price which this year reached $180,699 pesos ($8,676 U.S.). In dollars, the increase in total sales was 1.5% and 4.2% in the average price.
Of the total handled, only 111 foals (21%) were sold in the ring, a figure that barely exceeds those withdrawn, and 418 were repurchased (79%), which means an increase of 14.6% in the proportion of repurchased compared to 2019. As a result, the percentage sold fell by the same proportion.
The auction faced a very contracted demand, in tune with the general economic situation.
Summary of Results
Every day the presence of the buying public was reduced and the number of horses that were repurchased in the opening price increased, which was $80,000 pesos ($3,841 U.S.), while two years ago they opened with $50,000 pesos ($2,476 U.S.). There were 124 yearlings, 23.4% of what was offered, which did not advance beyond the opening price, being repurchased and sold later by their owners or kept their property waiting to place them at a better price after the auction.
The 529 horses offered in the ring came from 117 breeders, but only eight breeders consigned a total of 184 head (34.8%), being: Salomé Gallegos (40); Cuadra La Presita
(28); Abelardo Gallegos (28); Maximiliano Pérez Castañeda (20); Carlos Espinoza of Los Monteros (19); Rancho Hacienda Santiago (17); Joaquín Ramón Peláez-Cortés (17); and Luis Arturo Vázquez Solórzano (15).
This offer represents the genetics of 125 stallions, standing out for their numerical presence: Krash Cartel (28); Danny Cartel (27); Zulu Dragon (20); Southern Corona (18); Jabuti Eagle SA (16); Wave Carver (15); Sea Horse Corona (14); Red Storm Cat (12); The Ocean King (11); and Fearless Fritz (10). The 171 yearlings of the 10 stallions mentioned above represented 32.3% of the total number of head auctioned.
The highest average sale price was for the progeny of: Okey Dokey Fantasy (by Okey Dokey Dale) with 900,000 pesos ($43,214), which are two fillies of his first crop bred in Mexico; Taint Your Wagon (by PYC Paint Your Wagon) with $598,333 pesos ($28,729 U.S.), determined by the record sale price in Mexico of $3,000,000 pesos ($144,047 U.S.) offered by the colt Invencible; Jess Navigating (by Feature Mr Jess) with an average of $496,875 pesos ($23,858 U.S.); Red Storm Cat (by
Mr Jess Perry) whose 12 progeny averaged $327,500 pesos ($15,725 U.S); Rapid Fire Jess (by Feature Mr Jess) with his progeny selling for an average price of $320,000 pesos ($15,365 U.S.); and Danny Cartel (by Corona Cartel) with an average of $316,296 pesos ($15,187 U.S.) for his 27 yearlings, among which the colt Mr Juan obtained $1,300,000 pesos ($62,420 U.S.) as the second highest seller in the ring of this auction.
The numerous offspring of Krash Cartel (by Corona Cartel) was notable, reaching an average of $302,142 pesos ($14,508 U.S.) per head, with Peligrosito Cartel his main representative that reached $1,000,000 pesos ($48,016
U.S.) for being the maternal brother of Muy Peligrosito, winner of the 2021 All American Juvenile; Nofishinonafullmoon (by Separatist), whose three yearlings averaged $300,000
pesos ($14,404 U.S.); and Southern Corona
(by Corona Cartel) with an average price of $277,222 pesos ($13,311 U.S.), led by the colt BR Chivali Men which closed at $1,000,000 pesos ($48,016 U.S.). I conclude this select group with Zulu Dragon (by First Down
Dash), whose progeny averaged $243,000 pesos ($11,667 U.S.).
In the sale catalog, several offspring are recorded that were produced by embryo transfer, reproductive technology that is still
in low proportion, but increasing its presence in the equine industry in Mexico. The mares responsible for more than one offspring are: Sandra Aguerrida (by Aguerrido), Toles (by Ought To Be First), Warm Devotion (by Walk Thru Fire), Your First Moon (by First Down Dash), BHB Mighty (by Mr Jess Perry), Down To Separating (by First Down Dash), Jess Clear This (by Mr Jess Perry), and No Moon Too Soon (by First Down Dash).
From the notes taken in the sales office, the list of foals that were quoted at $500,000 pesos or more ($24,008 U.S.) was obtained, which is part of this report, and from which the first three highest selling hip numbers were selected.
The list is headed by Invencible (Hip 179) that closed at 3’000,000 pesos ($144,047 U.S.), repurchased by his breeder Javier Alberto Gómez Eudave of Rancho Las Guásimas. He was a highly sought-after colt in the ring, but the decision not to sell him remained firm in the face of any offer. His price is a new record that doubles the value of $1,400,000 pesos ($69,328 U.S.), valid to date, achieved in 2019 by Juanito Y Danny.
