A look at Favorite Cartel as the leading money earning sire for 2020 will reintroduce the Nearco sire line to the American Quarter Horse. The Nearco sire line is represented
in the American Quarter Horse by such stallions as Beduino, Master Hand, Hempen and Zevi, who come down the sire line from Nearco through his son Nasrullah. But in the case of Favorite Cartel, Nearco comes
to the American Quarter Horse as a sire
line descending from Nearctic by Nearco. Nearctic was the sire of the famous Northern Dancer. More on this later.
The story of Favorite Cartel began with racehorse trainer Paul Jones, the #1 all-time leading Quarter Horse trainer with money
earnings of over $88 million. His runners have won over 450 stakes races. Paul Jones, along with Terry Thompson of Thompson Racing Stable, bred Favorite Cartel. When you visit with Paul Jones about Favorite Cartel, you get the distinct impression that he is just as proud of his role as a breeder as he is as a trainer.
We will let him explain how it all got started. “I followed the family business. I grew up around it. I’ve been here on the racetrack most of my life. Since I was five or six years old. My dad ran a few horses and
I helped with the breeding and different things. That is how I got into the business.”
He continued about his role as a breeder. “The breeding comes from my dad. He owned
two stallions and a few mares, and we bred a few horses in the backyard. So, I was around the breeding side of it as much as I was around the training side of it. Although my dad never bred any great horses, he didn’t have the quality he needed to be in the top competition. I used to help him breed the mares, check the mares when they were in heat. I did some of the breeding myself when I was a kid. So, I have been around the breeding aspect of it for a long time.”
He continued, “I always liked the breeding side of it. When I was a kid, I used to breed Game Roosters. Besides racehorses, my dad had homing pigeons. Believe it or not, if you look at the breeding process of
