The #8 horse on this list is Chicks Beduino, representing the Thoroughbred sire line that comes down from Nearco through his son the great Nasrullah. A look at Favorite Cartel as the leading money earning sire for 2020 will reintroduce the Nearco sire line to the American Quarter Horse.
the pigeons and sometimes the chickens,
it is even more sophisticated than with our horses. The way they inbreed and crossbreed and the records of how the inbreeding and outcrossing works is much more sophisticated than people breeding racehorses and that taught me about breeding, too.”
“My breeding program is really small, but I also bred Foose who earned $1.6 million and he is a leading sire, and I was part of breeding Finding Nemo, who was a top racehorse. So, for a little breeding program I have had quite a bit of success.”
When the discussion came to the breeding of Favorite Cartel, Jones started on the dam side of the pedigree to tell the story,
“I was looking for a Corona Cartel mare. Jaime Gomez had Shenoshercorona in his barn and he told me the owner wanted to sell her. I trained Whosleavingwho which was out of Lil Bit Rusty, and Shenoshercorona
is out of the same family. Shenoshercorona’s mother Shenoshespecial was by Special Effort and out of Lil Bit Rusty.”
Jones continued about his appreciation for this mare family and the attraction this mare held for him. “Whosleavingwho was by Chicks Beduino and out of Lil Bit Rusty. He was probably my first really good Grade one horse. He was my first winner of the Champion of Champions, and I won eight Grade one races with him. So, he was just a great horse and one
of the first of the great horses I have trained. So, this mare came available. I was looking for a Corona Cartel mare and then she was out of Shenoshespecial by Special Effort and out of Lil Bit Rusty on the bottom side. So, it was a plus for what I was looking for because I really loved that female family of Lil Bit Rusty and Whosleavingwho.”
Experience told Jones that a breeder has to
be on the lookout for an outcross, and that takes us to the next phase of the story of the making
of Favorite Cartel. “I felt the Quarter Horse industry needed an outcross. You have to go back to Beduino, probably the last Thoroughbred
that really made a big hit in the Quarter Horse industry, and that was quite a few years back.
