All American Derby-G1
INSTYGATOR
by Tracy Gantz
Francisco Javier Barboza and his family traveled to Ruidoso Downs for All American weekend both excited and with heavy hearts. Barboza’s
3-year-old Instygator had qualified the fastest for the All American Derby-G1, but Jose Ernesto Guzman, Barboza’s uncle and the gelding’s former owner, had died only five days previously.
When Instygator upset favored Empressum, who was going for the Derby Triple Crown, the Barboza family remembered Guzman.
“I dedicated this win to my uncle,” said Barboza via translating help from Barboza’s wife, Gladys.
“He put so much work into the horse industry, and our whole family dedicated this race in loving memory of him,” Barboza said.
Though Instygator had qualified the fastest, Empressum went off as the 4-5 All American Derby favorite, having previously won the Ruidoso Derby-G1 and Rainbow Derby-G1. Bettors made Instygator the 2-1 second choice.
