“It was very exciting. It was a huge surprise, but we knew he had a lot of potential. This year he showed what he was made of.”
- Francisco Barboza
Just before the gate opened, Empressum tossed his head, and thus he broke poorly, in last. Instygator, on the other hand, came out brilliantly on the lead for jockey Juan Pulido. Instygator drifted in slightly during the first part of the 440 yards, but he dominated throughout to win wire-to-wire by 1 1/4-lengths in :20.912. Empressum ended up in fifth.
“It was very exciting,” said Barboza. “It was a huge surprise, but we knew he had a lot of potential. This year he showed what he was made of.”
Santos Carrizales Jr. trains Instygator for Barboza, who races in the name of the
Barboza Racing Corporation. Barboza is in the construction business and lives in Seagonville, Texas. He said he has owned racehorses in partnership with others for about five years. Guzman raced Instygator last year, and Barboza took over as sole owner in 2021.
Guzman raced many top horses. Just
two years ago, he won the All American Futurity-G1 with Mr Jess Jenkins, owned in partnership with Rito Sosa. The partners also raced Jess Proved Youwrong, winner of the 2020 Oklahoma Derby-G3.
Guzman purchased Instygator from breeder Bobby Cox for $25,000 as a yearling at the
2019 Heritage Place Fall Mixed Sale. Though Instygator was winning his first stakes in
the All American Derby, he already had an impressive record.
At two, he finished second only to the brilliant Whistle Stop Cafe, who was later named the 2020 World Champion, in the
All American Futurity. Earlier that year, Instygator ran third in the 2020 Heritage Place Futurity-G1 (won by his half-brother Shott Gun), and that fall he ran second in the Texas Classic Futurity-G1. At Remington Park earlier this year, Instygator was second again in the Heritage Place Derby-G2.
