Danjer has built a consistent reputation from the very first year he began racing when he captured the 2018 All American
Juvenile Stakes, through last year when his multiple graded victories earned him the titles of 2020 Champion Aged Horse and Champion Aged Gelding. He returned to Ruidoso Downs for another All American weekend in 2021, this time triumphing in the $200,000 All American Gold Cup-G1 contested on Sept. 6.
The win was especially satisfying for owners Dean Frey, Billy G. Smith and Pat Guthrie (the latter racing in the name of Downtime Enterprises LLC) because in 2020 Danjer ran second in the Gold Cup by just
a neck. Danjer proved his superior ability this time around when he even was able to overcome a less-than-stellar start.
“The hop away from there kind of concerned me a little bit,” said Billy Smith.
