the 440 yards. He began to pull away toward the wire, winning by 1 3/4-lengths. Muy Peligrosito stopped the timer in :21.168 for a wire-to-wire win.
“He started to put a lot of effort (toward the end), and he did really well,” said Gallegos. “We were very impressed with the time.”
The All American Juvenile went off as the 10th race, followed by the All American Futurity-G1. Gallegos noted that Muy Peligrosito’s time beat the :21.252 clocking of Futurity winner KJ Desparado.
Gallegos and his family believed in Muy Peligrosito because they have known him since he was a baby. Gallegos said that they purchased his dam, the Walk Thru Fire mare Peligrosita, when she was carrying Muy Peligrosito.
Darling Farms and Jaime Gomez bred Peligrosito to One Fabulous Eagle and put her in the 2018 Heritage Place Fall Mixed Sale through the Lazy E Ranch. Gallegos, who lives in El Paso and in Mexico, bought her at the sale for $11,500 and took her to the family’s ranch in Mexico. Peligrosita, who now has three starters, all of them winners, foaled Muy Peligrosito there the following Jan. 20.
“Since he was born, he was a very strong horse,” stated Gallegos. “As a foal, he got up very early.”
That strength backfired a little bit as Muy Peligrosito grew up.
“As a yearling, he was actually very bad,” said Gallegos with a laugh. “That’s why he
is a gelding. He kept fighting with the guys, and when we brought him to the U.S. nobody wanted to groom him or get into the stall with him.”
Once he was gelded, Muy Peligrosito settled down. He made his racing debut on May 29 in the trials for the Ruidoso
Futurity-G1, but he finished seventh and came out of the race with sore shins. Valles and Gallegos gave him time, and he didn’t race again until the All American Futurity trials.
On the first day, Muy Peligrosito won his trial by 1 3/4-lengths, the second-longest shot in the field at 61-1. His time of :21.412 wasn’t fast enough to be one of the five times that day to qualify for the Futurity, but ironically it was faster than all five of the qualifying times the following day.
“Nobody paid any attention to him,” said Gallegos. They will certainly pay attention to the little gelding now.
Juan Esquivel owns and trains second- place Valiant Charm (Valiant Hero-Charmin Chief Corona). Jose Enrique Ortiz has ridden the gelding in all six of his starts, including a win in a maiden race at Remington Park and a victory in his All American Futurity trial.
Dunn Ranch’s homebred Hallelujah Nights (PYC Paint Your Wagon-Tres Sea) finished third under jockey Ramon Sanchez for trainer Monty Arrossa. The gelding had won three of his four previous starts. He qualified for the Ed Burke Million Futurity-G1, but lost all chance when the horse to his inside became rank and floated him to the outside rail.
Completing the field were Downrite Handsome (First Down Dash-St Pats Tea), Whizkey Glasses (FDD Dynasty-Marys Southernpolicy), Chizum (Tempting
Dash-Ms Eaves), Shesa Relentless Gal (Hes Relentless-A Snowy Cartel), and Misty Cracker (A Revenant-Misty Blue Mercedes), with Phoenominal (Apollitical Jess-Famous Phoebe) and Political Rose (Apollitical Jess-Cartel Rosie) dead-heating for ninth. Apollitical J Legacy (co-owned by Gallegos) and In Hott Pursuit were scratched.
