New Mexico State Fair Derby-RG3
BIGG DEE
by Tracy Gantz
Bigg Dee is the kind of horse every trainer wants in his barn—talented, professional, and consistent. Trainer James Gonzales II has done
an excellent job with the three-year-old gelding, whose latest triumph occurred in the Sept. 19 New Mexico State Fair Derby-RG3.
The Derby kept Bigg Dee’s 2021 record almost perfect. In six starts, he has won five and dead-heated for second in the Mountain Top New Mexico Bred Derby, his only loss for the year.
Mario Delgado has piloted Bigg Dee in 10 of his 13 lifetime starts. In this 400-yard derby, the two made an excellent team once again. Sent away as the 1-2 favorite, Bigg Dee broke on top and just kept going, winning by a length in :19.586.
“He had a clean break, and he just went on and just does what he does best,” said Gonzales. “He’s a good horse.”
Rex Wells of Friona, Texas, owns Bigg Dee, having bought him for $30,000 from breeder MJ Farms at the 2019 Ruidoso New Mexico-bred
