Garañones Derby
ESPEJO FUSILERO
by Luis Prieto Zamudio, translation by Speedhorse
On August 15, seven qualifying tests were held towards the final of the Garañones Derby, where 49 three year olds of Mexican breeding
participated that were auctioned in 2019, and whose owners paid the fees to keep them eligible for this race.
In the battle against the stopwatch over 350 yards, Espejo Fusilero and his partner Feuture Horse stood out with the first and third periods, and in the middle of them Divas First Anita with the second.
The final was held two weeks later, having as an economic incentive a bag of $1,225,650 pesos ($60,032 U.S. approx.) to be distributed propor- tionally among the ten finalists, according to their position at the finish line. The fans favored the three participants mentioned above, markedly the filly Divas First Anita, who came from winning the Mexico Derby and placing second in the Mexican Crianza Challenge Derby.
Horses and riders ran cleanly and the race flowed at an impressive pace. At first, BR Lightning moved with agility, but quickly Espejo Fusilero and Feuture Horse subjected it to order, and the duel took place between companions in the center of the track, whose riders demanded them thoroughly. In the final line, it was Espejo
Fusilero who won by neck difference, with the skillful assistance of Yair Daniel Báez Soto, setting a time of :16.90 seconds, for a 102 speed index.
Espejo Fusilero is the first
son of the stallion Carnegie
Haul out of Jess Blushing (for
Feature Mr Jess) and bred by
Javier Rosique León in his
San Diego Del Espejo barn;

Cartas Blancas, where he is trained by José Ángel Santos Zamudio, who is officially represented
by coach José Eduardo Baltazar Carmona. He is also a member of this Feuture Horse team, which finished second under the direction of José Ángel Ambrosio Medina, in his reappearance after a few months of disability.
In his brief two-year campaign, Espejo Fusilero won the Garañones Futurity on Nov. 8, 2020, over 300 yards, with a 104 speed index, ridden on that occasion by Mario Alberto López Marmolejo. He qualified for the final by winning the third trial, where he beat the very constant Juanito Y Danny. His record is 8-5-1-0 in eight outings and
he has accumulated earnings of $2,168,985 pesos.
Feuture Horse, holder of
the current track record in 300 yards, finished in second place. The son of Sea Horse Corona in Feature Bye Jess in (by Dashin Bye) was commanded by José Ángel Ambrosio Medina and, as already mentioned, belongs to the Cuadra Cartas Blancas and was trained by José Eduardo Baltazar Carmona. His race time was
:16.94 seconds, for a 101 speed index.
BR Relámpago (Southern Corona-Buck The Rules, by Mr Jess Perry) finished third
under Alejandro Almazán. The colt is owned by the Cuadra Bronco Rider and trained by Ismael Parra Martínez.
Blazzin Fritz (Fearless Fritz-Blazin MS Perry), BR Chivalito (Southern Corona-Chivali Go), Dance Saqqara (Jesstified-Saqqara), Jabuti Libby (Jabuti Eagle SA-Valiant Libby), Divas First Anita (Divas First Down-Julies Lil Jess), SE Doctor Strange (Jabulani-SF Finite Dash) and RG Valentine Corona (Swingin Corona-Crystal Dancer TB) completed the order of finish.
