KOOL JERRY
by Michael Cusortelli
Casey Whitaker’s Kool Jerry was an odds-on favorite in the $15,000 Elko County Fair Derby on Sept. 6, closing day of the Elko County
Fair meet.
Trained by Sergio Canales, Kool Jerry broke
on top from the three gate and briefly dropped
to second place, a head behind then leader Transpiring. Kool Jerry took the lead again at the top of the stretch with a neck margin, and he was always in command.
He covered the 400 yards in :20.082. and his winning margin was a 1/2-length over Transpiring. Jesus Canales was in the saddle.
Kool Jerry was coming off of a wire-to-wire, neck victory in a 330-yard $5,000 open-allowance dash at the White Pine Racing meet at Ely, Nevada.
Raced in four states, the gelding has won five of 13 starts and the $6,150 winner’s share of the purse boosted his total bankroll to $32,570.
Kool Jerry was a finalist in last year’s Utah Bred Futurity at Wyoming Downs and in the John Deere Pocatello Downs Juvenile Challenge in Idaho, and he finished in third place in the BNB Maiden Frolic.
The gelding was bred in Utah by Kent B. McKell out of lightly raced A Striking Chick. She has produced one winner from five starters. Kool Jerry is her first stakes winner. His second dam, the winning Chicks Beduino mare This Chicks Special, was a three-time winner and a finalist in the 1995 Twaynas Dash Futurity-G3 at Laurel Brown Racetrack near Salt Lake City and in the 1996 Elko County Derby. His third dam, Debel Do, was a money earner racing in California, and his fourth dam Kay Cee Deb was a seven-time winner.
Second-placed Transpiring (Foose-Proud Checker) earned $3,150 to bring her bankroll to $14,695 from 12 outs for his owner, Jeffrey D. Smith. Cordarelton Benn rode the bay filly for trainer Glade Van Tassell.
Italian Waves (Wave Carver-Italian Princess) ran third, 1 1/4-lengths from Kool Jerry, for owner Win The Day Racing Inc. Jose Antonio Figueroa rode the sorrel colt for trainer Matt Carter Larsen.
Time Too Go (Seperate Interest-Makndreams) was fourth and Eyez Of Cartel (Five Bar Cartel-Angel Eyez), and Oh Jangles (Feature Mr Bojangles-Oh La Hot) completed the order of fin- ish. Jumpnourchic was scratched.
