                 NEWS BRIEFS
On July 1, 2021, the American Quarter Horse Association spread the news on its offi- cial website, which in its first three paragraphs says the following:
“The American Quarter Horse Association has confirmed that RG Chosen Jewel, a 2017 black mare, has lowered the 110-yard World Record to :6.744.
“She set the record in the February 28 Francisco Pasquel Clasico at Hipodromo de las Americas.
This is the second World Record ever set
at the Mexico City, Mexico, racetrack – the first was the 250-yard record set by Allens Cash in 2012, but RG Chosen Jewel is the first Mexican-bred horse to set a World Record”.
The Facts
In the SPEEDHORSE April 2021 issue (pages 172 and 173), it was published that RG Chosen Jewel won the Francisco Pasquel Classic at the Hipodromo de las Americas, setting a New Track Record for 110 yards in :6.744. Several days later, the connections of Rancho Las Gaviotas, owner of the filly, realized that this record improved the :6.770 time in force as a World Record until that moment.
It was the Mexican Association of Breeders and Horsemen of Quarter Horses, A.C. (AMCCCCM), who was responsible for
managing what is necessary before the American Quarter Horse Association (AQHA) and provid- ing the necessary evidence to accredit the record, in accordance with the provisions of rule 301.6.1 of its Handbook; evidence that once analyzed
by the Racing Committee led to the aforemen- tioned approval.
The condition for this classic is summarized as follows: for Quarter Horse specimens of three years and older born in Mexico, whose own-
ers paid $33,000 pesos ($1,569 U.S. approx.) to nominate and register. RG Chosen Jewel fully complied with this, as did eight other registered participants. In the draw for starting positions, she was number 6; only she and the gelding Toast Horse were maidens. It was contested as Race 9, the highlight of the Sunday performance.
The filly was thoroughly prepared by the Rancho Las Gaviotas team to win her first race and classic at the same time. “It truly exceeded all expectations, as she not only met the goal set, but also knocked down the record time of our racecourse (6.82 seconds), which four months later would be recognized by the AQHA as a New World Record. This is incredible!” com- mented his on-site coach and owner Alfredo Rabanal Salinas.
“That pleases us very much, because my team, my family and I dedicated the race to a very dear friend who passed away on December
31, 2020, and who intervened in a fundamental way in the breeding of this filly and so that
it reached our hands: Mr. Willard Douglas McLaurin Aguirre,” Alfredo said excitedly.
Unlike her previous five races, this time she behaved very well at all times. She seemed to have studied and learned the script to follow, perfectly tuning in to her team goal. For the first time she was mounted by the young rider Heriberto Camacho Sotelo, who rode her into the winner’s circle.
Her nervousness, power and explosiveness were now factors that acted in favor of the result obtained. “This filly was always very fast, unfortunately with many behavioral problems that prevented her from standing out before, including injuries caused by her own behavior,” said Alfredo Rabanal Salinas.
She crossed the finish line with a 3/4-length lead over BR Corona Queen (by Southern Corona) ridden by Juan Diego Márquez.
The official announcement of the result included the New Track Record time, with 6.744 seconds improving on Charly Cartel’s 6.82 seconds (by Watchful Vigilance) set October
14, 2018. And as far as the World Record is con- cerned, the holder of it was the gelding Carneros, who achieved 6.770 seconds in an allowance he won on June 16, 2019, at Ajax Downs Racetrack, located in Ontario, Canada.
