JD BACCARAT
by Tracy Gantz
Owner R.D. Hubbard and trainer Paul Jones are always a powerful combination. Put them with a horse that has the blood-
lines of JD Baccarat, and stakes victories are almost inevitable. Sure enough, they began 2013 with a win in the Jan. 20 KOFX Radio Handicap-G3 at Sunland Park.
JD Baccarat was coming off several seconds and thirds, and he went off as the 7-1 fifth choice. Jockey Ricky Ramirez
got the gelding out of the
gate quickly, and then JD Baccarat demonstrated his gameness. He quickly took command, only to receive serious challenges from Tres Seis Nueve and Zulu Dragon. JD Baccarat repelled them, however, to win by a neck in :16.881 for the 350 yards.
Hubbard owns JD Baccarat in partnership with Johnny Cope, Stan Herzog,
Butch Southway, and Bat Masterson. In 22 starts, 5-year-old JD Baccarat has won seven races, including the 2012 Higheasterjet Handicap-G3. He finished third in the
2011 Ruidoso Derby-G1, placed in two other stakes, and qualified to the 2010 All American Futurity-G1. The gelding was squeezed back at the break of the All American Futurity final, losing all chance.
Julianna Hawn Holt
bred JD Baccarat in Texas from unraced Sizzling Lola. With three winners in four starters, the mare has also gotten Sizzling Perry, who finished third in the 2012 Hialeah Derby. The second dam, stakes-placed Sizzling Lil, was the Broodmare of the Year in 2001, having pro- duced the likes of Champions Corona Kool and Corona Chick.
Multiple graded stakes winner Zulu Dragon (First Down Dash-Hidden Dragon) finished sec- ond for jockey Larry Gamez. Eduardo Gonzalez trains the 6-year-old horse for the 21 Partnership.
Tres Seis Nueve (Tres Seis-Ya Ya Sisterhood) ran third with Jaime Leos aboard. Owned by the Valle Guadiana Corporation and trained by Juan Gonzalez, the 4-year-old colt was second in the Sunland Winter Derby-G2.
Completing the field were KR Dragonfly (Separatist-Dreamers Wild Child), A Spring Snow (This Snow Is Royal-Lexines Legacy), Teller More Bourbon (Teller Cartel- Bourbonstreetchick), Time For a Cigar (Corona Cartel-Time For A Goddess), Corona For You (Corona For Me-My First Twist), and One Diamond Kitty (Genuine Strawfly-One Diamond Cat). Jess Cuervo, The Steel Wave, and Top Gun B were scratched.

 Billy Montgomery Louisiana Downs Stakes-RG3
PERRYS RUNAWAY
by John Moorehouse
Perrys Runaway opened his sophomore sea- son in fine fashion. Gerald Libersat’s home- bred 3-year-old gelding doubled his stakes win
total in his inaugural out of 2012, claiming victory in the $35,000 Billy Montgomery Louisiana Downs Stakes-RG3 on Jan. 19.
It marked the fifth win in seven lifetime outs for Perrys Runaway, and the $21,000 payday pushed his total bankroll to $203,377. The pre-race favorite logged
his second straight vic-
tory, both coming in stakes
company. He finished first
in the Louisiana Champions
Day Juvenile-RG2 held
in December at the Fair
Grounds, also placing
third in last year’s LQHBA
Breeders’ Futurity-RG1 at
Evangeline Downs, and
qualifying for last year’s
Louisiana Breeders’ Laddie
Futurity-RG2.
Perrys Runaway was rather brilliant in
his first stakes out as a 3-year-old. A Kevin Broussard trainee, Perrys Runaway made a sharp break from the four hole and opened
up a one-length lead at the first call. He continued to lead by daylight going into the stretch, then held off T Boy C during the final yards to win the 350-yard race by a neck.
Jockey Donald Watson was in the irons as Perrys Runaway completed
his stakes-winning trip in :17.639, registering a 96 speed index while running into a 7 mph head wind.
Libersat bred Perrys Runaway out of Ms Perrys Money. The gelding is the first stakes winner out of his dam, who has three starters from five foals. Ms Perrys Money logged a 2-0-5 record in her own competitive career, which consisted of 10 starts.
T Boy C (Sir Runaway Dash-Toast To Mallard) finished second. Jose Guzman owns T Boy C, who is trained by Miguel Rodriguez and had Raul Ramirez Jr. aboard.
Pantherisland (Panther Mountain-Miss Beau Windy) was third for owners Alan and Sharon Colley. The Dave Correll trainee was ridden by Alfonso Lujan.
Following the top three across the wire
in the Billy Montgomery were Special Fine Corona (Oak Tree Special-Miss Fine Corona) in fourth, followed by JCS Who (Heza Fast Dash-Special Rockette), High On Sassy (Game Patriot-High On Cider), Coltins Fast Dash (Heza Fast Dash-Six Streakin Salute), It Aint Kool (First N Kool-Twelve Fifty Eight), Dreamers Fast Dash (Heza Fast Dash-Dashin In My Dreams) and Dashin Forward (Look Forward-Go Dashing Teal).
