City of Hialeah Stakes
HONOR ME GOOD
by Michael Compton
Honor Me Good, an 8-year-old veteran of 35 career starts, nearly won the Orange Blossom Stakes at Hialeah Park on Dec. 23, closing from fifth
to finish third, beaten by less than a length. The experienced gelding left little to chance in the City of Hialeah Stakes on Jan. 20, however, leading from start to finish and registering the second stakes win of his accomplished career.
Honor Me Good darted to an early advantage following the break. Under confident handling from jockey Oscar Rincon, the gelding maintained his lead throughout and drew away in the late stages to win going away. He hit the wire a half-length clear of run- ner-up Freaking, already a stakes winner at the meet, to stop the timer in :19.515 for a 97 speed index.
“We liked that we were drawn next to Freaking, as these good horses really try hard when they’re next to each other like that,” said Ralph Muniz, father of winning trainer Brandon Muniz.
Owned by Rancho Los Dos Portrillos, LLC, Honor Me Good has enjoyed a stellar career. Winner of the 2008 Intermountain Handicap, Honor Me Good has placed in six stakes races, four of them graded. He set a new track record at Evangeline Downs in 2008 for 350 yards in :17.462. Bred in Idaho by Dennie Hill or Kent Taylor, Honor Me Good is out of the stakes-placed mare Miss Casady Lady.
In second was Freaking (TR Dasher-Chickasis), who is owned and trained by Ricardo Martinez and was ridden by Freddie Martinez. Joltin Jess (Take Off Jess-Jettin Home) was third under Shanley Jackson for owner Glenn Graff and trainer Matt Frazier.
Following were Ridin A Easy Streak (Streakin La Jolla-Easy Ridin Chick), Legendary Express (Ocean Runaway-Metered Express), Jess Cashin In (Mr Jess Perry-Feet Down First) and Ima Gator Fan (City Place- TB-Ima Special Rose). Takin Quick Cash (Quick to Flare Up-Takin Away the Cash) was scratched.
Crystal River Stakes
CALL ME SUNDOWN
by Michael Compton
Call Me Sundown entered the Crystal River Stakes at Hialeah Park on Jan. 20 with a score to settle with Doyles Dashing Star. When the two
clashed in a Jan. 6 allowance, Doyles Dashing Star reported a handy 2 3⁄4-length victor over Call Me Sundown. Off their prior meeting, Doyles Dashing Star was the odds-on choice in the Crystal River, but in the end, it was Call Me Sundown earning the first stakes win of his career in the 660-yard test.
Away alertly from the inside, Call Me Sundown and jockey Osdany Leal emerged with a clear early lead. He bore out through the lane and in deep stretch joined up with Doyles Dashing Star near the outer rail. The two hit the finish together with Call Me Sundown holding Doyles Dashing Star and Aron Hunt safe by a neck, covering the distance in :32.551 for a speed index of 95. Call Me Sundown had to with- stand two jockey objections for interference leaving the chute but stewards dismissed both claims of foul.
A 6-year-old gelding who has raced exclusively at Hialeah the last two seasons, Call Me Sundown was bred in Louisiana by Ronald Webb and Donald Kelly and races for Lazaro Gonzalez. Darlon Mesa trains Call Me Sundown, who is out of Sundown Lucy, also the dam of 2007 Maple Leaf Futurity and the 2008 All Canadian Derby winner Feature Lucy.
Runner-up Doyles Dashing Star (Heza Fast Dash-Georgia Wildcat) is owned by Rachel Stephens and trained Gene Stephens. Third-place finisher Cash At The Line (Takin On The Cash-Gold At the Line TB) was ridden by Agustin Silva for owner Julie Irwin Cotton and trainer Judd Kearl.
Following were Zack Of Hearts (Volcom- Dashing Dion), JW Sensuous (Royal Quick Dash-PW Comment), Shesa Gottum Beat (Beat The Feet TB-Shesa Dashing Dame) and Perry Otoole (Mr Jess Perry-Miss O Toole). Streakin King Corona (King Corona-Streakin Pacific) was scratched.
Biscayne Stakes
DONT TELL LILA
by Michael Compton
Fresh off a maiden victory on Jan. 4, Dont Tell Lila promptly joined the ranks of stakes winners on Jan. 20 with a sharp score in the $23,500 Biscayne
Stakes at Hialeah Park.
Ridden by Oscar Rincon, Dont Tell Lila bounced
out of the gate at the start and simply bounded clear from his rivals late to win the 250-yard fixture by one length. Battling to the wire for the minor awards were runner-up Natovas Courage and jockey Harold Collins and third-place finisher Hiclass Fly, piloted by Francisco Ramirez. Dont Tell Lila stopped the timer in :13.156 and earned a speed index of 98.
Dont Tell Lila, the only runner from his dam, two-time winner Jessthisgirl, is owned by Salvador Pimienta and was bred in Colorado by Mason King and Kim Kessinger. The 3-year-old gelding is trained by Brandon Muniz. Dont Tell Lila actually crossed the wire first in his career debut in May of last year
at Ruidoso Downs but was disqualified from purse money. Seven starts later the son of Teller Cartel broke through for good, leading a field of nine from start to finish at 440 yards in his first race at Hialeah.
Second-place finisher Natovas Courage (Captain Courage-Natovas Dasher), a winner in an allowance in his prior start, is owned and trained by Rogelio Martinizez. This was his first stakes placing. Third placed Hiclass Fly (Fly Jess Fly-Hiclass Bling) is owned by Racehorse Inc. and trained by Arthur Gordon. Prior to the Biscayne, Hiclass Fly was sixth in the Hialeah Futurity following three consecutive wins.
Following the top three were race favorite Bubba Carver (Wave Carver-Rustys Lil Lady), Flying To The Dash (Fishers Dash-This Dreams Flying), Load Your Guns (Corona Cartel-Dashing Little Reba), One Famous Chance (One Famous Eagle-Saratoga Song), Calamity Jamie (Ivory James-El Streaker), Drews Got Game (Ivory James-Ima Task Also), and Princess Lil Bit (Coronas Leaving You-Princess Toast).
