The Thoroughbred stallion Glencoe was foaled in 1831 in England. He raced in England and then he came to America after siring one foal crop in his native land. Despite just one foal crop in England,
he proved to be a significant sire, but he
proved to be a very important sire in America. One of the long-standing conversations over the years is about the use of Thoroughbreds to produce Quarter Horses. There are some for
it and some against it. When we look at the history of the two breeds, we find many horses were significant in both breeds. Glencoe is one of those horses. Our story of Glencoe will tell how he became a tie that binds the American Quarter Horse together with his influence, especially through the stallions Peter McCue, a Quarter Horse and Domino, a Thoroughbred.
Glencoe was bred by George Child-Villiers, the 5th Earl of Jersey. He was raced by his breeder making 10 starts with 8 wins, 1 second and 1 third. His first appearance on the track was as a three year old in 1834 winning the Riddlesworth Stakes, then he was second in a £100 Sweepstakes to Plenipotentiary. His next start was a win in the Desert Stakes and then he won the 2000 Guineas Stakes. He finished third in the Derby Stakes again, a race won by Plenipotentiary. He won his next three starts- the Goodwood Cup, Racing Stakes and the Garden Stakes- to finish the year with 7 wins and 1 second and 1 third. He made one start in 1835 winning the Ascot Gold Cup. Lord Jersey issued a challenge to a prominent runner named The Whip, but the challenge was not accepted, and he was retired to stud.
