Stockwell.
by Gohanna. The dam of Trampoline was Web, one of the most important mares in the Thoroughbred. She was sired by Waxy and out of Penelope by Trumpetor. She was full sister to the important foundation sires Whalebone and Whisker. When you survey pedigrees during this period you will find these full brothers and sister appear together in many pedigrees.
Glencoe was retired to stud but never stood for his owner. An Irish immigrant to America named James Jackson purchased him for a reported 2,000 guineas. It was stipulated that he stand at stud for one year in England under the ownership of Jackson. Glencoe reportedly sired 21 foals in that
first crop. One of them was a mare named Darkness, who is the third dam of Plutus, winner of races like the Newmarket First Spring Sweepstake and the Great Eastern Railway Handicap. He was exported to France. What makes Darkness interesting is that she was sired by Glencoe, whose second dam is Web, and she was out of Fanny by Whisker, the full brother to Web. This gives Darkness a breeding pattern of 3x2 to the full brother and sister. Another one from
the 1837 crop was a mare that is called the Glencoe Mare. She is the second dam of Petrarch, who won the 2000 Guineas, St Leger and the Ascot Gold Cup. This Glencoe mare was sired by Glencoe and out of Alea
by Whalebone, the other full brother to Web, and we have the 3x2 breeding pattern in this mare to the full brother and sister.
Pocahontas was foaled in the 1837
crop, and she became one of the greatest broodmares to influence the breed. Her success as a blue hen mare alone made Glencoe an influential sire. She made most of her contribution through her sons Stockwell, winner of the St Leger and the 2000 Guineas Stakes; Rataplan, winner of the Doncaster Cup and the Ascot Gold Cup; and King Tom, a stakes winner in the Brighton Biennial Stakes, the Triennial Produce Stakes and a second in the Epsom Derby. Stockwell alone was the leading sire in England seven times. King Tom was the leading sire twice. They were both great broodmare sires.
When Glencoe came to America, he went to Alabama to stand at Jackson’s Forks of Cypress Plantation. He stayed there for seven years. When Jackson died in 1840, he remained there until 1844 when he was sent to Tennessee to stand with Thomas Flintoff, until he was sold in 1848 to W. F. Harper
in Kentucky. He remained there until 1857 when he was purchased by A. Keen Richards when he died a few months later.
It has been reported that Glencoe sired 481 foals with 371 fillies. This explains his reputation as a broodmare sire. But when we look at his colts, we see several that contributed
by Dux by Matchem by Cade by Godolphin Arabian. The dam of Misfortune was Curiosity by Snap, and she was out of Sister To Miss Belsea by Regulus by the Godolphin Arabian. The dam of Selim was the Alexander Mare by Alexander by Eclipse by Marske by Squirt by Bartlet’s Childers by the Darley Arabian. The dam of Eclipse was Spilletta by Regulus by Godolphin Arabian. The dam of the Alexander Mare was a Highflyer Mare by Highflyer by Herod and her dam was an Alfred Mare by Alfred by Matchem by Cade by Godolphin Arabian. We have noted in the pedigree of Selim multiple crosses to the three famous Thoroughbred foundation sires the Godolphin Arabian, the Byerly Turk and the Darley Arabian. When we look at the nine-generation breeding pattern of Selim we find that he
was 5x6x6x6x6x6x7x7x7 to the Godolphin Arabian, 7x8x8x8x8x9x8x9x9x9x8x9x9 to the Byerly Turk and 7x8x7x8x7x7x7x9x8x9x8x9x9 to the Darley Arabian. This shows how the Thoroughbred formed as a breed with a major contribution of these three stallions and not through their influence as sire line stallions as we often see but when discussing them as great sires throughout the pedigree.
The dam of Glencoe was Trampoline that won stakes like the Oatlands and
the Windsor Forest Stakes but her most important race was a second in the 1000 Guineas, a race for three-year-old fillies. This race is run at 1 mile.
The sire of Trampoline was Tramp, the winner of 9 of his 13 starts with 3 seconds. He won such stakes as the York Gold Cup and the Beverly Gold Cup. Tramp became an important sire of classic winners including Barefoot (St Leger), Zinganee (Ascot Gold Cup), St Giles (Derby) and Dangerous (Derby).
Tramp was sired by Dick Andrews, who won 24 of his 34 starts including King’s Plate twice. He was sired by Joe Andrews by Eclipse, and he was out of Gohanna Mare
