Many of the biographers for Glencoe have noted that he was known for speed, but again, that is the speed that he could carry over a distance. His major stakes wins were the Riddlesworth Stakes at one mile, the 2000 Guineas Stakes at one mile, the Goodwood Stakes at one mile, and his Ascot Gold Cup at two miles.
The sire of Glencoe was Sultan, who raced for six seasons winning 14 races. Among his wins were the Newmarket Gold Cup and the Trial Stakes twice.
He won a match race with Gustavus, a winner of the Epsom Derby as a six year old. He retired to become a leading sire in England and Ireland from 1832 to 1837. He counts among his winners, in addition to Glencoe, to be Augustus, Ibrahim, Bay Middleton and Achmet, all winning the 2000 Guineas Stakes.
Sultan was sired by Selim, winner of such races as the Craven Stakes at one mile and the First-Class October Oatland Stakes in 1806 and 1807 at a mile. He was matched with the great race mare Lydia, and he won the race. He was the leading sire in England in 1814. He counts among his runners Azor, winner of the Epsom
