Santos Carrizales Jr., Remington Park’s leading trainer at the 2022 meeting, ran away with the April 16 Remington Park Oklahoma Bred Futurity-RG1. With four horses qualifying for the final, Carrizales took the top three spots—or technically the top two spots because two of the three horses dead-heated for first.
PYC Avenue, San Lorenzo Ivory, and Eye On The Card started from three different parts of the starting gate and ended up within a half- length of each other at the wire. PYC Avenue drew into the middle of the field, with San Lorenzo Ivory on the outside and Eye On The Card on the rail.
Lota Hot Mess, who drew just to the outside of PYC Avenue, took his name seriously and ended up having to be scratched at the gate. That meant a bit of a wait, followed by a reload.
“There was a lot of trouble in the gates,” said Bryan Candanosa, who rode PYC Avenue. “I think my horse stood in the gate the longest because we were the first ones loaded in. He handled it like a champ. But then after going back in, I really didn’t expect him to break well.”
Instead, PYC Avenue came out of the gate like a veteran, battling Apollitical Face for the lead. San Lorenzo Ivory also broke well, but then he ran greenly throughout the 330 yards for jockey Juan Pulido.
“The race was a little complicated,” said Pulido. “I hit him with the left hand and he lugged out. So, I hit him with the right hand, and he lugged in.”
Despite his somewhat erratic path, San Lorenzo Ivory came on strongly at the end, reaching the wire with PYC Avenue, the photo unable to separate them. Thus, it ended up as a dead heat for the victory, accomplished in :16.669.
“I’m just glad it worked out in the end,” said Pulido. “We learned a lot from this race.”
Eye On The Card came on late to finish third, giving Carrizales the sweep. Carrizales trains PYC Avenue for owner Josefina Guzman and San Lorenzo Ivory for owner Rogelio Marquez Jr.
It was the first win in this race for both riders. Marquez won the 2021 edition with San Lorenzo Tay, who on the same card this year finished fifth in the Remington Park Oklahoma Bred Derby-RG2.
Marquez, who now lives in Rosenberg, Texas, honors his hometown of San Lorenzo
in Mexico, by using “San Lorenzo” in their names. He purchased San Lorenzo Ivory, then named I V Gold Digger, for $52,000 at the 2021 Heritage Place Yearling Sale from Flying N Performance Horses. The gelding ran second in a maiden race at Remington before acing his trial by 2-lengths for the fastest time.
