Easy Date Stakes-G3
POPS FIRST LADY
by John Moorehouse
After a couple of near-misses on the derby circuit in 2021, Pops First Lady broke through for her first stakes victory, closing well to capture the $75,480 Easy Date Stakes-G3 at Remington Park on April 16.
Ruse Ranch owns Pops First Lady, a four-year-old filly who was making her fifth start in stakes company. She placed second in last year’s Firecracker Derby-G3 and third at last year’s Texas Classic Derby-G1. She also threatened in her most recent out, the $50,000 Decketta Stakes, but finished fourth albeit three- quarters behind the race winner.
This time out, Pops First Lady prevailed. She broke third from the No. 6 gate, then overtook the front- runners to lead by a head going into the stretch. Pops First Lady held off SS Classyjess at the wire by a nose.
Ruse Ranch LLC owns Pops First Lady, who now has four wins in 12 career starts. The $44,730 first- place share of the purse pushed her total earnings to $172,803. Charles Shults trains Pops First Lady, who finished the 350-yard race in :17.359 for a 98 speed index. Bryan Candanosa had the riding assignment.
Gary Kurz and Double M Racing bred Pops First Lady in Texas out of Shazooms Pop Pop, a 2-time winner at Manor Downs.
SS Classyjess (Rock Solid Jess-High Class Broad) was second for owner Edgar Rosales and trainer
Jose Carrizales. Ricardo Hernandez Jr. was in the irons. Valiant Stars (Valiant Hero-Cluster Of Stars TB) finished third for J & SM Inc. and Stone Chase Stables LLC. The Fred Danley trainee had Noe Garcia Jr. aboard. Followed by One Kool Dreamer (Hes Relentless-One Kool Wagon), Cat Daddys Lil Girl (Big Daddy Cartel-Girlonthego), Flyweight Carver (Wave Carver-Flaming Chivas), Dalts Fancy Pistol (Im A Fancy PYC-Dalts Pistol), Tempting Knockout (Tempting Dash-Passem Up Perry)
and Streakinlilwagon (Fast Prize Jordan-La Jollas Fortune). Apollitical J Julia was scratched.

Reigning AQHA Distance Champion Wascallywittlewabbit began defense of his title with a wire-to-wire, 3 1/2-length victory
in the $50,880 Pauls Valley Stakes-G2 at Remington Park on March 31.
Trained by Mike Joiner for owner Rogers Farms of Clint, Texas, Wascallywittlewabbit went 870 yards in :45.080. Josh Romero rode the 7-year-old Heza Motor Scooter gelding, who earned a 97 speed index and the $29,946 winner’s share of the purse.
Wascallywittlewabbit was bred in New Mexico by Mike Weatherly, and the gelding was making his first start since Oct. 23, when he ended his championship campaign with an emphatic 2 3/4-length win in the 870-yard $104,500 Cox Ranch Distance Challenge Championship-G1 at Albuquerque Downs. All told, he has won 12 of 23 starts -- including 11 of 17 at the 870-yard distance -- and he has banked $312,046.
Shockinglyfamous (One Famous Eagle- Shocktime), the 4-5 favorite, finished second under Stormy Smith for owners Stone Chase Stables LLC and Kasey Willis, who also trained Shockinglyfamous.
Bubba Bad (Second Painted Sign-Dashin Di) ran third for owner/trainer Ray Enlow. Daniel Torres rode the homebred gelding.
Holy Storm (Red Storm Cat-Holy White Socks), Petes Favorite (Pete’s Wonder-Jiggle It Around), and You Buy I Fly V (One Valiant Hero-Regal Fly) completed the order of finish.

Sent to post as the 9-10 favorite in a field of eight sprinters, Aguila Negra Racing Inc.’s Relentlessly responded with a 3/4-length victory in the $50,240 Bob Moore Memorial Stakes-G2 at Remington Park on April 16.
Relentlessly covered 300 yards in :15.185 while posting a 99 speed index. Raul Valenzuela rode the 4-year-old Hes Relentless stallion for trainer Jose Huerta.
Relentlessly was shortening in distance off of
his wire-to-wire 1/2-length victory in the 350-yard Eastex Stakes-G2 on March 19. Campaigned in four states, including Texas, Relentlessly has won eight of 14 races, and the $29,838 winner’s share of this purse from his third career stakes victory increased his earnings to $340,400. The stallion’s six wins in nine outs at Remington Park include last year’s $361,010 Heritage Place Derby-G2.
Relentlessly was bred in Texas by Randy and Sandy Coleman, and he sold for $9,700 at the 2019 Heritage Place Yearling Sale in Oklahoma City.
The stallion is out of Runaway Renata, a winning homebred daughter of Champion Carters Cartel. His second dam, winner Runaway Romance, ran second in the 2007 West Texas Futurity-G1 and produced stakes placed Run With The Eagle, also a finalist in the 2013 Rainbow Derby-G1.
Sheza Freighttrain T (Freighttrain B-Cloning Around) finished second for owner Patrick Richardson. Raul Ramirez Jr. rode the 4-year-old mare for trainer Charles “Duke” Shults. Lunderborg LLC’s Dickey Bob (Apollitical Jess-Paint Or More) ran third under Edwin Escobedo for trainer Jason Olmstead.
