Alex Picov Memorial Futurity
SNOW MOOSE
by Danny Camp
Third fastest qualifier from the Oct. 5 trials, Snow Moose stepped up his game in the finals for his maiden win in the $68,986 Alex Picov Memorial Futurity held at Ajax Downs on Oct. 26.
It was a sloppy and rainy day when Snow Moose broke from the 8-post under jockey Brian Bell. They didn’t get the best start but they made the best of the situation. They were grinding and at the halfway
mark where they gained the lead. They crossed the finish line a neck to the good, stopping the timer at 20.099 and earning a 93 speed index. The gelding also earned the $27,595 winner’s share of the purse, which boosted his lifetime bankroll to $31,123.
This was Snow Moose’s first win, breaking his maiden in a stakes event.
The gray gelding has had five career starts. He placed second in his trial for this race, and he placed third in his trial for the Rainbow Futurity on July 8.
His team includes owner/breeder Milena Kwiecien and trainer Jason Pascoe. He was homebred in Ontario, Canada, out of the winning mare Favorite Pearl. She earned $26,340 in her racing career and has produced
100% winners, as Snow Moose is her only foal.
He traces back to his second dam Super Perla Negra, who was a finalist
in the 2001 Lou Wooten Handicap-RG3 and earned $41,278 during her racing career. She has produced 10 winners from 16 starters with earnings of over $600,000.
Fastest qualifier Valiant Chick Insnow (Valiant Hero-AJ Chick In 15) placed
second under jockey J. Botello. She is owned by Milena Kwiecien and trained by Jason Pascoe. She was coming off a two race win streak including her maiden and trial for this race.
Maximize (Ivory James-Easily Holland) came into the finals with the fourth
fastest qualifying time and he stepped it up a notch and placed third for his owner Belinda Taggart and trainer Jason Pascoe. Ricardo Moreno was in the irons. He placed third in the QROOI Bonus Futurity on Sept. 14.
Completing the remaining order of finish were A Shades Of Cold (Cold Hard Dash- Sassy Shades Of Gray), Walkthruivory (Ivory James-This Fire Is Fast), Firstprize Charlotte (Dashair-Ms First Prize Pearl), Francesca (Highest Fire-Star Tour TB), Stanair (Dashair-Fury Us). Heza Majestic Hero and SW Anninilator both were scratched.
