MESSAGE FROM THE DEPARTMENT HEAD
It brings me great pleasure to share our 2019 research report with you.
One of the major themes that strikes me about this year’s research activities is collabora- tion. This has been a hallmark year for forging new partnerships. As a testament to this, our department’s annual Research Day had a record number of presenters and attend- ees—our faculty and resident research projects involved more medical student and undergraduate co-investigators than ever before. We’ve had a number of projects and collaborations grounded in community care and health services delivery, particularly around low vision care and rehabilitation with the CNIB using population level data.
We’ve also had a growing number of collaborations with the applied sciences, highlight- ing a spirit to move our discipline forward and taking advantage of the newest technol- ogy and arti cial intelligence. We’ve had teams working on innovative solutions to problems in the realms of health care delivery and health care management, investigat- ing the use of new, safer materials, and using machine learning and modelling for teaching, assessment, and diagnostics.
Research has always been a priority for our department, both within our resident training program, and within our faculty community. It is gratifying to see this priority take a strong foothold within our culture and to see it ourish in such meaningful and applicable ways.
I congratulate everyone on moving the research needle forward and extend my best wishes for another great year that lies ahead.
Dr Martin ten Hove
