INSIDE THE DEPARTMENT
BRIEFLY NOTED
Dr Martin ten Hove
Dr Robert Campbell
Dr ten Hove has been working with the Department of Diagnostic Imaging to diagnose giant cell arte- ritis (GCA) by imaging the scalp vessels with high-resolution MR angiography. An extension of this work in also exploring the use of AI/machine learning in the diagnosis of GCA.
Dr ten Hove is also part of an expert panel that recently authored Guidelines for Managing Patients with Concussion. Ongoing work in developing a recovery protocol that uses reading as form of concussion rehabilitation: https://braininjuryguidelines.org/concussion/
Dr Campbell continues to lead a multidisciplinary CIHR-funded Vision Health Service Research program focused on population-level quality of care, with recent ndings published in Ophthalmology and JAMA Ophthalmology.
As co-chair the Ontario Glaucoma Quality Standards Committee, Dr Campbell is now guiding research investigating population-level quality indicators to guide interdisciplinary care policy. An early innova- tion from the new Quality Standards has been the rst ever use of the Ontario Telehealth Network by optometrists to access ophthalmology services. This program is being led clinically by the Queen’s/ KHSC Department of Ophthalmology (Dr Campbell, Dr Jinapriya, and Dr ten Hove) and research focused on the evaluation of this new program is ongoing with province-wide roll out anticipated.
Dr Campbell is also co-lead of a collaborative, translational project with the Faculty of Applied Sciences developing novel devices including a non-invasive intraocular pressure monitoring system.
The Cornea Service is preparing to be one of the Canadian participating centres for the NIH sponsored Zoster Eye Disease Study (ZEDS) clinical trial looking at the e ectiveness of long-term treatment in decreasing eye disease and/or chronic pain in patients with Herpes Zoster Ophthalmicus. We are hoping to start patient recruitment July 1. We will be seeking qualifying participants from our region and may be in contact with our referral base for potential patients. These will include patients with recently active anterior segment sequelae of herpes zoster. If you are interested in referring patients for the study, kindly contact the Cornea Service.
Dr Farmer is busy compiling course material for his ophthalmic pathology e-learning platform. Future avenues for research will be to understand user preference, attitudes, and motivation to learn online versus the traditional method of learning. Knowledge uptake and retention (short term, long term) will also be important outcomes in a randomized educational study that will be launched once the platform is operational.
Dr Gonder will be participating in a Canada-wide randomized control trial investigating the manage- ment of post intravitreal injection endophthalmitis.
Dr Kratky is busy working on the Queen’s Thyroid Eye Disease tracking database (QTEDS), while also assembling a POV video atlas. He is continuing research into the use of denatonium benzoate as a taste test for nasolacrimal duct obstruction.
Dr Strube’s team has validated their novel 3D-printed silicone strabismus surgical model, and a manu- script describing this research is currently in the peer-review process. Dr Jagan (PGY-4) has been invited to deliver a paper presentation at COS 2019 in Quebec City summarizing this research.
Using their model, a structured strabismus surgery simulation curriculum is being developed, including the creation of surgical videos demonstrating techniques using the model. As part of the curriculum, a simulation lab strabismus surgery assessment tool is also under development and has been validated nationally.
Dr Bal has been investigating the use of an interactive retinal OCT Module as a teaching tool for resident training. He has also been preparing an update on current diagnostic modalities and management ap- proaches for Chronic Central Serous Retinopathy, a case report: Unilateral acquired choroidal folds and hyperopic shift as a presenting sign of a large frontal convexity meningioma, and an endophthalmitis survey project (abstract publication at COS this year).
