          PATHOLOGY OF THE BILE DUCTS
             CHOLEDOCHOLITHIASIS
▪ Patientswithcholedocholithiasismaybeasymptomaticandthebiliaryductsmaybe normal in caliber.
▪ Clinicalsymptomsareasfollows:jaundice,elevatedbilirubinandalkaline phosphatase, and RUQ pain.
– An uncommon manifestation of choledocholithiasis is Mirrizzi syndrome. It is a clinical condition in which a patient presents with jaundice, pain, and fever secondary to a lodged stone in the cystic duct.
– Mirrizzi syndrome may be suspected with sonography, but typically it is diagnosed by cholangiography or endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography.
