On January 20, 2012, the traditional Himba
tribal leaders of Kaokoland in Namibia made a
declaration that was presented to the African
Union and the United Nations. Though Africa
is the only continent that lies in all four
hemispheres, the concerns and grievances of
the Himba are consistent with those of myriad
tribal nations in the Four Directions. Both the
contemporary circumstances and the historical
reference points presented by the Himba
have a distressing synergy with tribal
reality on every continent. The experience
is known, endured, and confronted by tribal
people in the Four Directions, be their
indigenous nations familiar or obscure to the
mainstream. We recognize ourselves in the
Himba. The Himba will recognizes us.
We are the Global Indigenous Council.
“I am Himba!”
