Her career began
as an art teacher,
and then as a first- grade teacher, for the Learning Improvement Center at Allen Park School District in
1969. Afterward, she became an interior designer and owner at La Maison Magnifique, an art, remedial reading teacher and writing teacher at the Clover School District, a teacher of Gifted
and Talented for the Cherokee County School District One, owner of the Learner’s Edge, Beaufort-Jasper Career Center as the Curriculum Supervisor and Tech Prep Director, and art teacher for the Gaston County Schools.
More recently, Ms. Abell worked as an assistant principal and administrative assistant at Union County Vocational Center, an elementary school
and middle school principal, and Special Advisor to vocational education at the
