                      Xanthan/CMC Binary System Activated with Frankincense

                                      Oil for Tomato Active Packaging

                                                    ABSTRACT

                    Novel edible system of xanthan (Xa) and carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC)

                    activated with different contents with frankincense oil (FO) was prepared.
                    FTIR  confirmed  the  successful  interaction  between  CMC,  Xa  and  FO.
                    Wide-angle X-ray diffraction showed that the addition of FO decreased

                    the crystallinity of the amorphous structure of CMC/Xa. TGA showed that
                    the samples were thermally stable at higher temperatures as detected from
                    the  calculated  integral  procedure  decomposition  temperature  (IPDT)

                    values  from  their  TGA  curves.  Water  vapour  permeability  was
                    significantly reduced while the samples colour were not changed after FO
                    addition.  The  samples  exhibited  a  significant  improvement  in  the

                    mechanical  and  antimicrobial  properties  in  the  presence  of  FO.  Some
                    preliminary  studies  showed  that  the  shelf-life  of  tomatoes  was
                    significantly  extended  after  coating  with  the  prepared  samples  when

                    compared  with  the  uncoated  tomatoes.  These  results  confirm  that
                    CMC/Xa/FO  edible  coating  might  be  used  potentially  as  a  promising
                    candidate in food preservation industries.
