                             Carboxymethyl Cellulose/chitosan Biguanidine

                       Hydrochloride Binary Composite Edible Films for Active
                                                 Food Packaging

                                                     ABSTRACT

                    Novel     carboxymethyl      cellulose    (CMC)/     chitosan    biguanidine

                    hydrochloride (CBg) binary composite edible films were prepared with
                    different  CBg  contents  (0wt%,  10wt%,  30wt%,  and  50wt%).  FTIR
                    confirmed  the  successful  preparation  of  the  films.  Water  vapour

                    permeability  was  gradually  reduced  with  increasing  the  CBg  content
                    while the tensile testing showed an increase of both tensile strength and
                    elongation at break upon increasing the  CBg content. Films  tend to be

                    yellowish  while  no  significant  change  in  the  total  color  difference  was
                    observed  in  presence  of  CBg.  Antibacterial  study  against  both  Gram-
                    positive bacteria and Gram-negative bacterium showed no inhibition for

                    CMC  alone  while  a  significant  inhibition  was  observed  for  CMC/CBg
                    films. CMC/CBg films were applied to tomato fruits, and it’s observed that
                    the mass loss was significantly reduced with CBg increasing while the

                    surface  spoilage  of  the  coated  tomato  fruits  was  inhibited  during  the
                    storage  period.    The  obtained  results  verify  that  CMC/CBg  could  be
                    potentially used as edible films for food and fruit preservation.
