 I’m sure you can remember this old Willie Nelson song which has not only become synonymous with his life but also the life of anyone who travels. It’s been said, Willie en- joys and spends so much time on the road, when he’s back home, he’ll still sleep in his bus
because its where he is most
comfortable. Doing comedy, I
have logged thousands of miles
in the air as well as in my truck
traveling this beautiful country
of ours. I have seen mountains
of the Pacific Northwest and
the blue waters of the
Caribbean. Toured through
New York City and stopped to
see the Niagara Falls on the
way to upstate New York. Any-
one who has spent time on the
road has seen many great won-
ders looking through the wind-
shield.
Cooking BBQ has done its part to help with frequent flyer miles as well, as I go from contest to contest in search of a win. These events have taken me to cities I may not have otherwise visited. Sure, I’ve been to a lot of the big cities either for business or passing through but it’s the other
cities, BBQ has brought me to where the most fun has been had. Some of those towns I have even wondered if Google knew where they were and when I arrived, I’m glad it did. I wouldn’t have missed it for the world.
Sights to be Seen
Traveling can be a daunting task, but I’ve loved it from when I was a kid. When my grandparents would take me to the Smokey Mountains. I got to see things I never would have if I’d never left my home in East- ern Kentucky. On the way to those mountains I was regaled with stories about my grandfa- ther’s time with both Daniel Boone and Davey Crockett (check your history and then do the math). I saw my first bear in the wild on those trips. Then
there was my first trip to the beach as a kid where I saw the massive Atlantic Ocean, dolphins, and jellyfish.
When I began traveling as an adult, apart from vacations, I would hit a
city, check into
my hotel and
sleep until the reason I was there arrived. Was I to give a speech, tell some jokes or some other reason? Then I’d catch a plane or point my truck to- ward home. It was a few years into my career when I was
