Building The Sport Of Steak Cookoffs!
SCA Family Keeping that Competitive Spirit Alive
By: SC Angus
I don’t know if you’re like me or not, but I’m missing my SCA family. I’m missing how we gathered in a new lo- cation for a family reunion of sorts each week. Sure, some were there every week while others would pop in an out, but by and large it was a reunion we looked forward to. I’m missing catching up on with each other and what we’ve been up to since the last time we hung out. Most of all, I’m missing the steak contests we had during our reunions. Since this virus has infiltrated our lives, these reunions are all on hold. Or so you thought.
One world champion made the remark
that he couldn’t look at steaks without
wanting to compete. This sentiment has been running rampant in our steak cooking community. Everyone has been racking their brains trying to figure out how we can get together. Brett and Ken have come up with a solution to help keep our competitive spirit alive. If you’ve been staying up to date with SCA social media, then you’ve seen Brett posing with all sorts of hamburgers. This was a clue as to what was about to happen – A Virtual Burger Cookoff at Your Backyard, which was held April 25th. By the time you read this, the contest will have come and gone with a winner determined by you via Facebook.
This isn’t the only thing happening during this time. Have you been following Casey & Judy Jones? Each week they have been doing comedic spoofs on steak cookoffs and
many well-known characters are showing up in
their Jacksonville backyard. Don’t worry, these characters are all played by the Jones’ (check out the mid-season awards hosted by “Joe Wilson”) so safe social distancing is being observed. Sev- eral are trying to figure out how to do a steak contest via Zoom, pictures, and other avenues this virus has pushed to trying in order to keep the competitive spirit alive.
With the latest news about social distancing being here for a while keep on the look out for other ways the SCA and family will be bringing you virtual contests. Slowly, we’ll be getting back together in the real world. Those areas not hit as hard with COVID and as the governors
begin lifting restrictions, we’ll see con- tests start to populate the cookoff cal- endar but until that time we will have to make the most of our virtual ride. Who knows, perhaps we will have one or two standing ones even when this is all over to keep our competitive spirit alive.
Business Partner
Whether it is virtual or in person, the SCA could not offer what we do with- out all our business partners. At any given contest you’ll see a variety of grills lined up ready to cook the win- ning steak and earn their Golden Ticket to the World Championships. One grill
making a huge splash is the M- Grills out of Mesquite, Texas. Travis and his team have put together a line of cookers with the grillmaster in mind. Both portable and durable, these grills have earned several top 10 finishes as well as a large, loyal following.
We are pleased to have M Grills as a part of the SCA Family.
ACE Points Race
Not much has changed since the last points were released as far as the Top-10 is concerned. Five points sepa- rate second place, Sandy Brown from the top spot currently held by John Pendray. We have
had a new addition to the top ten with Ben Blanton jumping in at 9th. With the others shifting around slightly the points race is still something to watch as we get back to a normal schedule and head to Ft. Worth in October.
With all this putting a damper on contests, we are still looking at having around 300 compet- ing in the World Championship Steak Cook Off. We look forward to seeing you around the country once again very soon but until then, keep your competitive sprit active.
