Traveling down from Rotorua through broad forested avenues, we drove round the largest lake in New Zealand, Lake Taupo, before reaching Tongariro National Park.
This park has outstanding volcanic features with herb fields, forests, tranquil lakes and active volcanoes. Ruapehu erupted in spectacular fashion in 1995 and 1996 sending clouds of ash and steam skyward.
