Leaving Tongariro National Park, we headed for Hawkes Bay, a drive of three and half hours, in which Alastair was stopped for speeding but got away with a friendly warning!
We were looking forward to two days in Napier, staying at the Quest hotel, especially as the town is famous for its architecture, rebuilt in Art Deco style after an earthquake in 1931.
Volunteer, Sue from the Art Deco Trust gave us a fascinating private tour in a 1930s Packard. We stopped at the National Tobacco Company - an archetypal Art Deco building in Port Ahuriri.
