Cahit Arif is a famous mathematician and scientist. All world knows his theory
named Arf Invariant.

Early Years

Cahit Arf was born in Thessaloniki (Selanik) , in 1910. Then, his family moved to İstanbul. He
started his education at Beşiktaş Sultanisi. In 1919 he and his family moved to İzmir and his inter-

est in mathematics was encouraged by his teacher who asked him to solve problems in euclidean
geometry.

In 1926 his father sent Cahit high school in France. His French was not good in the beginning.
But he got the best score in mathematics exam and he finished that 3-year-high-school in 2 years.

The economic situation of his family was getting worse. He had to come back to Turkey, because
of the economical problems.

However, he won a scholarship to continue his education in Paris.

After 2 years he graduated from Ecole
Normale Speriuere.
