His professional years

He came back to İstanbul to be a teacher. Cahit Arf taught at the Galatasaray High School in
1932.

After teaching at Galatasaray High School, he joined the Mathematics Department of Istanbul

Universtiy.
In 1937 he went to the University of Göttingen, Germany to study for his doctorate. He had his
doctorate with Hasse-Arf theorem. During World War II he continued his work there and pro-

duced the Arf invariants theorem.

Then Arf returned from Germany to Istanbul University. He worked there until 1962.

He was promoted to professor in 1943 and to ordinarius professor in 1955.

In 1963 Arf taıght at Robert College in Istanbul. Then, between 1964 and 1966, Arf worked at the
Institute for Advanced Study at Princeton in the United States.

He joined The Middle East Technical University in Ankara in 1967.

Arf retired in 1980 and lived in Istanbul

Arf played an important role to establish TUBITAK ( the Sceintific and Technical Research

Council of Turkey) in 1971.

From 1985 until 1989 he was the president of the Turkish Mathematical Society.
He received many awards and prizes.

He is the inventor of Arf invariants.

Arf died because of a heart attack in Istanbul on December 26th 1997 , at the age of 87.
