 THE STRODE FAMILY
The Strode family has also been researched extensively. No doubt many people were initially interested in the family because Martha Strode’s granddaughter, Rebecca Bryan, married Daniel Boone.
The Strode family is easy to trace back to Somerset, England. They were a wealthy merchant family who had an interesting political history that had been well documented. We are also lucky that there have been some VERY diligent genealogist/historians who have researched the Strodes.
In the pages to come I will be presenting proof of my family’s relationship to the Strode family. My research, along with the research of my cousin, Andrea Stine, has been able to find extensive DNA relationships back to the common ancestors of William Strode (1589-1666) from Shepton Mallet, Somerset, England and his wife, Joanne Barnard (1607-1649). Initially I believed that our direct relationship to William and Joanne appeared to be through their great grandson Edward Strode II (1660-1697) and his wife, Susannah Hatchett (1663-1697).
The histories written about Edward and Susannah Hatchett suggest that they both passed away on their voyage to America. This left Edward and Susannah’s children as orphans when they first landed in America.
The Strode family owned ships and it is likely that Edward and Susannah were traveling on one of their ships, with their family, to the New World. The ship that they took to America is sometimes called the “PAYSAY” but research suggests otherwise: The word "paysay" is a transliteration of the word "passage." All the early lists of ships of that period have been researched and there is no ship by the name of "Paysay" to be found.
I have not seen a mention of Margaret Strode as one of the orphaned children in any research. Three sons are consistently mentioned, Samuel (1684-1765), Edward III (1686- 1749) and William Strode (1688- unknown). There has been speculation of a son named George and of a son named Jeremiah.
