Page 56 - The Ancestry of Francis Bryan (1770-1863)
P. 56

So we have one document, a family history, which reveals Francis’ father’s name as Thomas, and it mentions the names of his brothers and one sister. This was the only documentation that we had on Francis’ ancestry until now.
Mrs.Clyde Bryan Eldridge stated that Francis had five brothers and two sisters. She places the six male children in their order of birth as follows: John, Thomas, Robert, Joseph, Francis and Morgan. She does not place the female children in any birth order, but does mention Francis’ sister Margaret (Peggy) by name. She called her “Peggie”. These are all very probable... Francis used all of these names, except Robert, when naming his children.
I have only found documentation for three families that closely fit the description provided by Mrs Clyde Bryan Eldridge.
Clyde mentions that Francis had a younger brother, Morgan Bryan, who moved to Tennessee. There is excellent DNA verification for this Morgan Bryan, including both YDNA and autosomal DNA matches. His name was Morgan William Bryant, Sr. He was born in North Carolina in 1778, moved to Sparta, White County, Tennessee and died in 1817. Matches to his descendants range from 6 to 20 cM. I see no reason not to add Morgan William Bryant ,Sr. as a brother to Francis.
The second excellent sibling candidate is Joseph Bryan (c.1772-1838). He also moved to Tennessee, and also to Sparta in White County where Morgan William Bryant resided. We do not have a YDNA match for Joseph's descendants, but we have autosomal DNA matches to almost all of his children. To date there are twelve matches which range from 33 cM to 7 cM. The birth date for Joseph is unknown but was estimated in the 1840 census as 1772. If he was born in 1772 he is younger than Francis and doesn’t fit Clyde Bryan Eldridge’s time frame for the birth dates of Francis’ siblings, but not by much. She also does not mention Joseph as having moved to Tennessee. There is certainly some leeway here, given the potential of imperfect memory. And so I have added Joseph Bryan as another brother to Francis.
The third sibling "candidate" is Peggy Bryan who married Alexander Sutherland. Her relationship to Francis is a well documented relationship. She has already been on our tree for many years.
It was Peggy's daughter Phyllis, and not Peggy herself, who married Griggs Hampton. 44
