Bryan Family History Documentation: Francis’ Father, Brothers and Sisters.
The following account was given to me (Larry Wayne Bryan) around 1980. Mrs. Clyde Bryan Eldridge was a respected school teacher and was almost born before Francis 1st died. I feel surely she would have known the family.
This is the only known report with any detail that refers to his brothers and sisters much less the father. Most of these siblings seem to be in their correct mention places in history and do indeed exist. However a connection for Thomas has not been made because the family history (written by Francis 1st) was burned in a later fire even though his bible is still available.
Even though this does not match some of the historical implications and legends I feel it is the most accurate account. It is the closest to an "eye witness" account we have. I do feel that in the long run it will match and fit with legends as well.
Francis Bryan 1st, was born in Virginia, June 25, 1770, married Phoebe Woodruff, born Aug. 22, 1777. They lived in Alleghany County, N.C. He represented Ashe County in State Assembly in 1819. He died Feb.10,1863. Phoebe died March 9, 1856.
"Six boys and 2 girls. John was the oldest, Robert was next. Thomas 3rd, Joseph 4th, Francis 5th, Morgan 6th. John settled on the South Fork of the Mitchell river in Surry County, North Carolina and went from there to Glade Creek in Alleghany County, North Carolina. Robert settled in Grayson County, Virginia on Chestnut Creek. Joseph also settled in Grayson County, Virginia on Chestnut Creek. Thomas made his home in Orange County, North Carolina (living at what is now Abe Bryan’s home place). Morgan went to Tennessee. Peggie (Elizabeth?) married Alexander Sutherland on Elk Creek, Grayson County, Virginia and one daughter (possibly Phyllis or Fillise) married Joseph Griess.
Thomas Bryan the father of these children is supposed to have come from Ireland.”
