Page 62 - The Ancestry of Francis Bryan (1770-1863)
P. 62

It is easy for me to believe that some wounded Quakers could have wound up at the Wilmington Hospital along with wounded Patriot prisoners, British and Loyalist soldiers after many of the skirmishes in North Carolina. The Bryant brothers might have been Loyalists, Quakers caught up in Battle of Guilford Courthouse or Patriots brought to the hospital.
So what happened to John, Thomas, Jr. and Robert?
Larry Bryan has some documentation for a John Bryan whom he believes is Francis’ brother. He does not have any information about John’s family or possible descendants.
In the Appendix there is information on Francis Bryan's family researched by a descendant of Francis' sister Peggy. Her name is Rebecca Moon. She does discuss one possible candidate who could be Francis' brother John. I have not found any documentation of Thomas, Jr. or Robert.
Were these three brothers old enough to have inherited property from their father and then lost that property because they were Tories. Did they remain unmarried, or without descendants? Did they die relatively early?
Joseph Bryan, Francis Bryan and Morgan William Bryant all appear to have been men of some modest means. They either inherited land or had the means to purchase land, enough to leave property to their heirs. I cannot find a will for Morgan, but there is one for Joseph.
Thanks to Larry Bryan's research and Mrs Clyde Bryan Eldridge's report, I believe we can confidently state that Thomas Bryan is the name of Francis' father.
On the following page I have an ancestry chart for Francis Bryan. My research proves that this is the correct chart. It is this chart which should be represented on Ancestry.com family trees by his descendants....and anyone who places his family on their tree.
And I hope to correct the record:
We are NOT direct descendants of Morgan Bryan and Martha Strode!
Francis Bryan is "Francis" Bryan, NOT "Franklin" Bryan, although his nickname was Frank.
Margaret "Peggy" Bryan: There is no evidence that she was ever named Elizabeth as any part of her name. There is no evidence that a woman named Martha West was her mother.
The next mystery to solve will be that of Thomas Bryan's parentage.....
