But DNA matching is only effective if you can find the common ancestor of the person with whom you match. And, how does that happen? You cannot conjure a name out of thin air. It comes down to family trees. But, let's be clear, it comes down to ACCURATE family trees.
I would estimate that, of the many trees that I have viewed on Ancestry.com, probably only 20% of them are accurate and well-documented. Having said that, you only need one perfect, well documented tree to hit pay dirt! And gratitude that someone did their due diligence for posterity!
Even if they are inaccurate, sometimes, with proper research, you can find the fault in the tree and fix it for your own tree. Not many people want to be told that their tree is "wrong"! OK. I have just been disrespectful to 80% of the trees on Ancestry.com. But, at least they have trees. I have never found another site that has as many trees which can be so easily accessed, as Ancestry.com. Despite the inaccuracies that one finds, I greatly appreciate this aspect of Ancestry.com. If you follow through with appropriate research it is always informative. You can rule people in and out or you can dismiss the whole tree as inaccurate.
How much to I dislike the trees on other sites? OH, LET ME COUNT THE WAYS! .....
They are all impossible to navigate. They all make it tedious and exhausting to build a tree and nearly impossible to search anyone else's trees. How do you ever find a common ancestor....I only have so much time, I am getting older! I will say that MyHeritage trees are not as cumbersome as some of the others.
So, give me my 20% on Ancestry.com any day! At least as of the year 2020!
Ancestry.com trees will be Ancestry.com trees. I will do my research and continue to look for documentation.
....but DNA MATCHING! This is revolutionary, changing in leaps and bounds! And this is where many of the answers may reside. Oh, and I can do this at home, with my computer and help from my distant cousins! Although I am not averse to a good road trip!
