VENEWS
KEEP ‘EM PEELED
The ever wonderful Dead Men’s Spex will be out and about this September so make sure you keep an eye out for them! Bringing
their extensive range of vintage glasses to events to vintage lovers and those serious about putting the finishing touch to any authentic period outfit, they not only supply genuine vintage frames but can also fit them with prescription lenses too. We love these frames from the 1930s with gold-filled sides, unusual octagonal tortoiseshell acetate rim with oval apertures that are a rare find in such good condition.
On Saturday 10th and Sunday 11th September they will be at the Milton Keynes Handmade and Vintage Weekend Extravaganza followed by the North Norfolk Railway’s 1940s Weekend on Saturday 17th and Sunday 18th September.
If you can’t make either, don’t worry, their website has hundreds of styles and periods to choose from. They have provided authentic period glasses to many stage plays and TV shows over the years so you can be sure they know exactly what they are talking about.
They also have some modern frames in the vintage style too, if you can’t find exactly what you are looking for in a genuine vintage item. www.deadmensspex.co.uk
Al Fresco
The long, light days of June and July start to gradually fade as time marches on through August, but there’s still plenty of the summer left, with the prospect of balmy evenings outdoors and entertaining outdoors in the garden.
Dairy House Antiques has a fantastic selection of garden furniture and statuary, perfect if you find yourself wanting something to brighten up a corner of your garden. From rustic to French style and everything in between you can find something just right for your style. And, if
you start to feel the chill in the evenings, you can grab yourself some cushions, rugs and blankets, which are always available, great for snuggling round the fire pit whilst enjoying a warming glass of red. www.dairyhouseantiques.com
Summer in the City
Award winning Pop Up Vintage Fairs London are bringing a mix of vintage fairs and markets to London this season. For vintage lovers that can’t wait for the weekends they host a series of summer vintage markets on the second Wednesday of the month from May to September at Canary Wharf. Traditional market stalls will be set up around Cabot Square with everything from fashion to antiques and collectables. Why not plan a day out and enjoy lunch al fresco in one of the many cafes and restaurants surrounding the square? There are still
two more before the season ends – Wednesday 10th August and 14th September from 10.30am to 6.30pm.
On Sunday 4th September they will be at their regular dedicated area at the IACF Antiques & Collectors Fair specialising in everything vintage from the 1920s to 1980s; fashion, jewellery and accessories, industrial lighting, French brocante, homewares and curiosities, alongside over 400 antique stalls. Get 2-for-1 entry to this fabulous event via their website. www.popupvintagefairs.co.uk
SLEEK AND TEAK!
Visit a Vintage Home Show near you this Autumn and you’ll be sure to find plenty of stylish inspiration for your home.
The show’s first stop is in Bristol on Sunday 25th September at the stylish Paintworks. Their first South-West show took place in Bristol in May and proved to be a great hit, with lots of sleek sideboards, funky chairs, accessories and fabrics ending up finding new loving homes and affirming a demand for preloved items in towns and cities all across the UK. The Leeds and Manchester shows follow on Sunday 9th October and Sunday 23rd October respectively, on whistle stop one day tours offering plenty for the interior style savvy.
Offering a showroom approach to buying vintage furniture and homewares, the shows allow you to check condition before you buy and measure to make sure it fits – much more touchy feely than buying online. If you want items from the 1950s to the 1970s like coffee tables, chairs, industrial lighting, retro artwork and atomic fabrics this is most definitely the right kind of show for you.
Tickets are available at the door on the day or in advance for all three locations from the website.
