CYTOGENETICS: SPECIMEN COLLECTION GUIDELINES
Prenatal Samples:
Sample collection Clinical History & family or provisional diagnosis is
Sample Type (trimester) mandatory All vials must be Labeled clearly with identifying
information & date of collection
Remove maternal decidua before transport
Place 5 cleaned vili (15mg by estimated weight) in a 15mL sterile
CVS (1st) centrifuge tubes (Poly-propylene tubes) with 5-7mL un-supplemeted
RPMI media it
Cap tightly and wrap cap with parafilm
AF (2nd ) Place 20mL of fresh amniotic fluid in 50mL sterile centrifuge tubes
Specimens mixed with (Poly — propylene tubes)
blood are not acceptable
Cap tightly and wrap a cap with parafilm
Cord Blood (3rd ) Draw 3-5 mL of cord blood into single green top tube (containing Heparin)
Kindly specify the tissue source (fetal or placental)
Products of Conception Transfer in 15mL centrifuge tubes with 5-7mL un-supplemented RPMI
Transport of fetus is illegal. media

Please ensure container is leak and puncture proof
Postnatal Samples:
Whole Blood (WB) Heparin
Blood is collected to a full draw in a labeled (Patient's name, identity no.) Sodium Heparin
(green top) vacutainer. Please refer to table on page 16
The vacutainer is gently inverted (7- 8times) to ensure proper mixing of blood and the
anticoagulant
Specimen should be free from hemolysis, clots and in the recommended quantity
Bone Marrow:
Collect Bone marrow aspirates (3.0 — 5.0 ml) to be in heparinised (green top) tube
containing 1 ml of un-supplemented RPMI media.
