HISTOPATHOLOGY: SPECIMEN COLLECTION GUIDELINES
All relevant clinical history, and site must be captured on the TRF, e.g. history of
previous malignancy
Please ensure that all biopsy specimens are sent in 10% formalin in a leak proof
container. Quantity of formalin added to preserve the tissue specimen, must be ten
times the volume of tissue biopsy it.
For bone biopsies, pre-operative X-Ray is required St
For bone marrow biopsies, hematological parameter, including P/S, Aspiration and
other relevant details are required
Classification of Histopathology Specimens
I. SMALL SPECIMEN (CODE: 1500D)
1. All endoscopic biopsies (e.g. 8. Gall bladder/Lap Cholecystectomy
Gastrointestinal, Esophageal, 9. Gingival biopsy
Duodenal, Colonic) 10. Laryngeal biopsy
2. Any lumps & bumps(<1cm) 11. Lung biopsy
3. Cervical punch biopsy 12. Lymp node (< 1.0 cm)
4. Cervical polyp (< 1.0 cm) 13. Oral Mucosa biopsy
5. Conjunctival biopsy 14. Pancreas biopsy

II. MEDIUM SPECIMENS (CODE: 1511D)
1. Any lumps and bumps (1.0 - 5.0 cm) 9. Ovarian tumor/Ovarian cyst (<5.0 cm)
2. Breast lump (1.0 - 5.0 cm) 10. Ovary and fallopian tube,
3. Cornea non- neoplastic
