Lesson 4:  ENGINEERING DESIGN

                                     What is engineering?

               What is Engineering Design?

               One can think of the engineering design process as a recipe for banana bread; it can be made a
               lot of different ways but it’s usually going to start with bananas and it’s going to end with a loaf
               of bread.  One such “recipe” for the engineering design process will be outlined in this lesson;
               this is not the only correct version of the process, it is just one example. It will provide a good
               starting point for students to explore the engineering process.

               Design Principles

               Design Principles are a set of considerations that form the basis of any good product.

               Why Use Them?

               Design Principles help teams with decision making. A few simple principles or constructive
               questions will guide your team towards making appropriate decisions.

                • Identify the elements of design.
                • Recognize design criteria and constraints.
                • Describe the purpose and importance of working in a team.
                • Use the design process to solve a technical problem.
                • Apply the elements of design to the design process.
                • Explain a design brief and apply the concept when using the design process.
