Welcome Welcome to a new year of musical discoveries and musical friendships. Summer 2017
Here’s a question that’s been on my mind lately: “Who gets to make music?”
to the One of my great influences is Liz Lerman, founder of the Dance Exchange. She asked, “Who gets to
music dance?” She answered by creating a professional dance company whose diverse ages, bodies, and
backgrounds reflected American society. Her work is an inspiring model of inclusion.
school Here are just a few of the people who made music at the Music School last year:
• The Akwaaba African Drum Ensemble and the Himalaya Heritage Music Group showcased our
efforts to welcome New Americans, including virtuosic professional performers and many young
students from around the world.
• Music & Movement classes and therapeutic sessions helped more than 300 preschoolers gain
early development and language skills, while easing the trauma of children affected by the opioid
epidemic.
• Graduating senior Olivia taught us about confidence and artistry in her compelling performance of
“Astonishing” from Little Women. “My great adventure has begun,” she sang. “I may be small, but
I’ve got giant plans!”
• The Sunflower Singers—a chorus of 100 adults with developmental disabilities and traumatic brain
injuries—filled the Community Room with their joyful singing and line dancing.
Who gets to make music? You do.
Take up the trumpet, play the drums, join a ukulele ensemble, or raise your voice in a chorus. Our
caring, experienced faculty members are as eager to gently guide a beginner—whether six or 60 years
old—as they are to help a talented young adult advance toward a musical career.
We invite you to make the music that moves you this year, and to join our joyful musical community.
Sincerely,
Peggy Senter
president and founder
