– The Baggage We Carry
There are seminal events and sources of impactful
information throughout the history of our Republic.
Such events leave deep impressions on the psyche and
hearts of us all. Experiences and stories, triumphs and
tragedies, justice and injustice, studies and research,
news, and reports, teaching and indoctrination, facts
and myths, truth and lies all combine to form a lens
through which we view the world. This lens can produce
a positive or a negative perspective, or often some
combination of the two. This lens has the potential to
govern our thoughts, emotions, actions, and reactions.
This lens has the power to influence our futures.
With respect to our nation’s so-called racial history, the
lens has produced a mental and emotional burden on us
all.
This burden is a debilitating baggage that saps energy,
breeds confusion and dissention, and is void of peace.
