Worse, it is often the catalyst that propagates hatred.
This baggage is carried individually as well as collectively
among various people groups. While it is different
between different ethnic groups, it is nonetheless an
incapacitating baggage.
For black Americans and other minorities, the history of
slavery, inequality, Jim Crowe, injustice, discrimination,
and economic disparity have understandably produced
the baggage of stereotypes, mistrust, and
misunderstanding. In the worst cases, it generates a
sense of inferiority, victimhood, and hatred toward
white Americans and the American culture. A
heightened sensitivity is often evidence of an underlying
volcano that is easily erupted by certain events.
For white Americans, the same history can produce the
baggage of resentment, a sense of superiority,
misunderstandings, stereotypes, and mistrust. Sadly,
the baggage of white guilt has recently been added.
In spite of the significant moral corrections our nation
has achieved since the sixties, the burden of this
baggage still remains. In fact, it can be argued that is has
increased over the past decade.
The dominance of secular culture in our society, and the
pervasive sociological definition of race has given birth
