University said it increased security after a string

of campus sex assaults. Now, some feel misled

Toronto Metropolitan University denies its messaging was untruthful and says decisions on
where to place security guards focus on a way that “maximizes safety.”
After a second woman was sexually assaulted on Toronto Metropolitan University’s downtown
campus, staff and students were in need of reassurance. In November, the university said it had
beefed up security — measures that included having six security staff “stationed” in Kerr Hall,
         where the assaults took place.
Months later, some members of the
         campus community say they haven’t
seen the promised boost to security
and rarely, if ever, encounter guards
         while walking through Kerr’s dimly
         lit, mazelike hallways. Internal
security schedules seen by the Star
suggest there are no guards actually
stationed in Kerr Hall, although one
or two are responsible for patrolling
         through it and several other
         buildings.

             University police officer Christopher Fitzgerald

An 18-year-old from Bucks County has
been arrested for shooting a Temple
         University police officer to death.
Miles Pfeffer, is charged with the murder
of a law enforcement officer and related
         offenses, the Philadelphia district
attorney's office said. He is also facing
charges in connection with a carjacking
he allegedly committed after the killing.

Temple put out a statement saying the
university is mourning the loss of Ofc.
Fitzgerald, who joined the department on Oct. 2021.
"Officer Fitzgerald gave his life to selflessly serve and defend this community. The courage and
bravery he displayed highlights the day-to-day sacrifice made by our Temple University Police
Officers to keep our community safe. This loss leaves an enormous hole in all of our hearts. He
was a father, a husband, a son, a colleague, and a friend," the university said.
