19woTHE WORLD%u201dS rld%u2019s most recent large mammal to be discovered was a new species of primate, named the %u201cCaqueta Titi%u201d (Callicebus caquetensis) which was first documented in 2010. But, from the moment the Caqueta titi was discovered, it became endangered. Only about 200 of these unique monkeys (whose babies purr like cats) live here on the boundary to Chiribiquete national park. Chiribiquete has an extraordinarily high level of biodiversity. Yet its boundary is a battlefield of illegal mining, poaching and logging. The Caqueta titi was discovered in 2010. From the moment it was first discovered, its numbers have already started to decline due to habitat fragmentation.s the boy, Kan%u00e1, makes his way back to his village, he is aware of the jungle%u2019s symphony of humming, croaking, and screeching... Then he hears something new... The faint sound of purring. Unsure what or who is making this unusual noise, Kan%u00e1 heads off in its direction.Like the jaguar, which Kan%u00e1 is named after, he moves through the maze of trees with silent and graceful stealth, not wishing to startle any animals. As he closes in on the source of the gentle sound, it fades and stops. Looking up to the tree%u2019s lower branches, he sees a rare treat... A family of Caquet%u00e1 titi monkeys.Caquet%u00e1 titi monkeys were first documented in 2010. Like the Chiribiquete Emerald Hummingbird, they are only found here. These pint-sized primates represent family unity and love to Kan%u00e1%u2019s people. The reasons for this are easy to see.The Caquet%u00e1 titi is unique in several wondrous ways. They are the most strictly monogamous of all primates and remain faithful for life. To date, DNA studies of offspring have never revealed infidelity. The happy couple are extremely affectionate with each other, always sitting next to each other, grooming and entwining their long, bushy tails. Caquet%u00e1 titis also make great parents, extending their petting to their youngsters, with whom they live with until the offspring are old enough to leave home at around 2-3 years old.
