A Chair to Celebrate
a Centenary!
As part of Global Intergenerational Week, members of the Beth
Johnson Foundation donated a chair to St Johns Primary School
(Penkhull, Stoke on Trent) and invited children to join them in
decorating it. The children chose the theme of Celebrating 100 years,
since the City of Stoke on Trent is celebrating its centenary this year.
On meeting the children, we discussed what made Stoke on Trent
special, and what made the city memorable. We compiled a list of
what the children told us, and this list included famous people (e.g.
Robbie Williams), football clubs (e.g. Stoke City and Port Vale football
club), famous foods (e.g. oatcakes) and pottery (e.g. Wedgewood,
Spode). The children then decided what they wanted to be involved
in creatively, and the work began. Some children were interested in
pottery and made their own pots for a display around the chair;
some liked sewing; others liked using glitter, pompoms and wool.
