For
the sake of
one child...
200 years ago this year, Saint
Madeleine Sophie Barat realized a new
beginning — the founding of the
Society of the Sacred Heart. With the
founding of the Society now she could
provide girls with the kind of educa
tion that instills a deep faith in God
and prompts to generously and
courageously serve others. In other
words, to nurture a way of life that
allows growth in wisdom, age, and
grace. As she said, “For the sake of
one child I would have founded the
Society.”
Madeleine Sophie Barat opened
the first school in Amiens, France, and
set the stage for new beginnings one
after the other from that time on.
Rose Philippine Duchesne, a friend
and fellow sister, extended the Society
by establishing the order in the United
“L o ve C o n q u er s A l l "
States in 1818. Carrollton School of
the Sacred Heart became a reality in
January of 1962 when classes opened
in the Barat Campus.
Overall, since its founding in
1800, the Society of the Sacred Heart
has grown into an international
community that has members and
ministry partnerships in 45 countries,
with locations in nearly 250 cities
across the globe.
