Sacred Heart women will work for the transformation o f our world by
acting on behalf o f others>particularly those in greatest need.
Surar-ne Cooke, RSCJ
"A social awareness which impels to action" is a core value of Sacred Heart education, which is evident in Sister Cooke's
support of the entire com munity's call to service. Sister Cooke urges: us. to, "see that Goal I II is Goal I in: action ."
When Sister Cooke became Headmistress in 1998, Carrollton already had well-establish.ee partnerships with the Barnyard,
Centro Mater and others, and these partnerships continue to thrive today. Throughout her tenure, relationships with other
organizations such as Breakthrough Miami, Honey Shine Program, Thelma Gibson Center, and St. Marys Cathedral
School have been established. "I am proud that Carrollton's community has embraced the idea of these community
partners." Additionally, service opportunities have expanded to include designated service days, student-led service clubs,
presentations by guest speakers, and Carrollton's participation in the Fairchild Challenge, Dig Pink, and in Network Summer
Service Projects,
One of Sister Cooke's most outstanding collaborations resulted in the establishment of Notre Dame de La Colline School
in Haiti. Her commitment was as much to the needs of the Haitian people as it was to enlightening the Carrollton community
about associated inequities. Hearts for Haiti service club is a perfect example of "social awareness which impels to. action.
The efforts of its club members
and participation by everyone
in the greater Sacred Heart
community helped raise funds to
build the school, where classes
began in June of 2014. Carrollton
continues to help support this,
facility with the Haitian medical
personnel and people of La
Colline,
In the try e spirit of the Sacred
Heart, Sister Cooke reflects, "No
one person can do everything.
Our greatest achievements were
accomplished by many, many
people."
